Boolean difference - one of those days!

Hi All,

I'm thinking this should be a straightforward boolean difference operation.. but no!

I'd just like to create recesses for the ring shank in the collet but I keep getting errors as above.

Any suggestions please?

Many thanks!
Gunter

Hi Gunter, I'm still investigating but I think it's getting confused with some grazing edges.

Try with this attached version where I rotated the circle by 90 degrees before making the ring part.

Hi Gunter, also Trim seems to handle this case ok so using Edit > Trim to cut the pieces up followed by Edit > Join can also be used as a workaround so you can continue with your work.

Hey Michael,

Thank you! When you say rotated the circle by 90 degrees, could you explain which circle please?
I'm keen to figure out how to troubleshoot these issues on my own.. would you be able to guide me as to what I should look for specifically? I made sure, both parts were solid, not joined surfaces so I assumed any boolean operations would work.

As always, many thanks!
Gunter

Hi Gunter,

This one here:

Well the weird looking result seems to be emanating from where 2 edges are crossing each other, here:

So that's the area that I would focus on.

For just getting it to work so you can move forward you can manipulate the circle used to generate the ring surface so there won't be an edge/edge crossing there.

Gotcha, thank you very much Michael.
When you have a chance, I'd be interested to know what causes this issue - no rush.

Much appreciated

HI Gunter,

As I said, I tried your file in Moi version 3 and the boolean works as expected.
I have version 3 and 4 installed on my system.

Best regards

Hi Gunter

part of your issues are the profile you are sweeping is folding on itself in the centre at the bottom
Then when you boolean out the band it self destructs

If you change your sweep profile so does a clean sweep it will work
I have done you an alternative sweep profile to aid in setting the stone

cheers
shayne
