MoI is in free public beta at the moment. The beta versions will expire after a short while. Jan 2008 I recall for the latest beta. Sometime soon you'll be able to buy MoI version 1 for $195.
Hope this helps. While it would be nice for MoI to be free, Michael needs to eat etc. Something you can't do when you give stuff away for free.
