Hi rhinouser141, here's an initial attempt using sweep with the option twist = flat to make the ramp surface.

It seems like the tricky part is that the ramp needs to shrink as it approaches the top, instead of being a uniform shape like this:

take a look at the attached file. is this what u want? (notice the ramp does not have a constant width)

I was able to make that only using MOI. However, I forgot how exactly I was able to do it, let me know if you really need to know how you can do this. so, maybe I can redo it and make a little tutorial about it!

As for the volute of a violin, for my part, I cannot find a satisfactory solution. Well for now.

Here is my tip:



But when I look at that piece of chocolate and think of a Mould, I see the center of the twisting looks like it is at an angle.

We might think this is done due to drafting requirements for chocolate release after cooling. My method just uses the default plane with no angles added to the Mould.

I cant do it by eye. I would need an advanced Moulding software to calc the drafting releases on such a spiral and cut... then I would rotate the result around and hack off the top and bottom to use as the cut for the Mould.

As for violins, I know of only two artists who have mastered the subject: Cristóbal Vila, with Modo, and Ivan Kukucov with Blender (there may be others....?).

I have a whole stock of documents and videos on violins. With MoI3D, it's the Volute that's giving me trouble. I keep coming back to this subject, I'm not giving up!

The slope runs out before getting to base.

Try this node file. It makes the spiral shape you are looking for.
To make this work I had to modify the "sweep" node, So it can accept the "flat" option.("Sweep.js" is attached.)
Replace the "sweep" node inside "Construct.js" with attached .js file

You need to do the lofting and trimming manually. :)

I did add the new Sweep.js to the node extensions folder.
Is there some other Sweep,js that needs to be deleted?

Sorry, I should've mentioned that it's not a complete node. It only makes the spiral shape and the base.
I couldn't find an easy way to automate the loft and trim process, So, Left it incomplete like you see.
Although, It is possible to do the rest manually.

After applying the node, you can join all pieces and loft the step area.
For me, the tricky part was to make a tangent line on top of the spiral.
This is how I'm doing it:
Make a construction line on the top of the spiral in the right viewport, (tan-int) Then draw a line on it.



In the top viewport, make a copy of this line and use the "loft" command to make a cutting surface.
Then, trim the spiral shape and cutting surface.
