A fresh look at MOI3D. Insane design!

MOI3D is probably the only intuitive 3D Modeling/CAD program that has gained a lot of command over the years in the 3D NURBS modeling environment. Thanks to its toolkit and flexible functionality, it is easy to adapt to your needs, which many people put into practice.

This is how a cool UI/UX designer describes his design concept: Nikolay Milovidov

Nikolai imagined how MoI3d could look like. More cool videos and information at the Be link

What do you think about the new design? Let's discuss!

It looks really cool but there are several aspects where that design overall is placing "looking cool" as a higher priority than usability.

For MoI the main emphasis throughout the product is on practical matters and ease of use first and looking cool is a much lower priority.

A couple of problematic things that stand out is the redesigned program icon is hard for me to clearly identify at small sizes, the current icon is legible even down to a 16x16 pixel favicon.

The very dark viewport background would make it difficult to work with black 2D wire drawings because of a lack of contrast.

Several screens show command UI being displayed inside the viewport area. It's better to avoid doing that when possible because it makes the UI get in the way of the objects you are trying to work on. That's why it is a focus in the real UI to have command options displayed in a dedicated area of the side pane instead of in the middle of the viewport area.

Probably the best part of the redesign is that the icons are looking really good there.

I think mostly the gripes about the Moi UI looking "dated" come down to just the icons not being all done in the modern sparse monochrome style. Maybe at some point I'll be able to give that a little energy but since it's very much just a cosmetic issue it is a low priority.

Nice but not for me, I still use the default colour scheme which I can work on for hours and see everything clearly.
Dark UIs are a strain if they are high contrast like this. Also the overly colourful icons would get old quickly, most of us use shortcuts anyway

Frankly: lots of lipstick, but does it do anything substantially different?

Clearly a great deal of effort was put into this new UI skin, but to my mind the beauty and pleasure of MoI
is how well it actually works. By analogy: a car that looks great but isn't fun to drive won't sell very well.
Related: a car whose look and feel morph into something new with each iteration risks confusing drivers.
Finally discerning drivers buy performance.

I think Michael has a good handle on the balance between form and function.

Very nice try and a lot of work in this presentation.

As others said, MoI philosophy is not to be sexy but is to be easy and efficient.

After you said that, having more choice for the style is a good idea for icons, colors if you keep the basic philosophy Simple-Efficient-Modularity.
But, we see most of us don't be ready to risk a revolution where we'd lose the fundamentals of MoI.

You made a hudge work. Grats !

Have fun !

MoI already has the easiest to use UI that I've encountered in software. Seems like improving on it across the board would take a tremendous effort.

I think the presentation is outstanding ! As an everyday interface I probably couldn't handle it more than 5min, it's way too much colourful.
I know nothing about UI design science, but for me the most important area for a modeller is the object I'm working on, everything else should stay behind and silent if you see what I mean ... looks like this version will force me to create happy stuffs :O) ...

I think that it looks awesome and much more modern. As Michael says there could probably be some changes to colors etc. to prioritize usability which I agree that is of course the most important. I would love to be able to customize every GUI component in Moi even though it's already very customizable.

I think it looks good.
for the Moi logo it should remain the inspiration light bulb.

but I am still using the default ui colors . works good.

I wish I had this guy's patience and skill, but I still prefer the default MoI.
Edit: I had to make sure that "prostate" doesn't have another meaning. "prostate interaction" seems a bit too invasive and not very friendly.

I hadn't previously noticed that piece of this redesign... Must be an unfortunate automatic translation.

The perennial satisfaction of using MoI hasn't quite reached perineal satisfaction!

Too much?

In our language, the word "Simplicity" and "Prostate" are spelled almost exactly the same
Простота - Simplicity
Простата - Prostate

Still, automatic translators do not always capture context, and even if there is no typo in the text, the translator may interpret the words differently

A part from tweaking some color to reduce the overall contrast and colorfulness, icons are really well made and pie menus is something I'd love to have coming from Maya. I'd buy this in a heartbeat.

Since we're playing a "what if" game here. These are my take on app icons. Simple and clean.
