Embedding an MOI3D Object into Microscoft Office

As part of my new course for new MOI3D users I wanted to demonstrate some uses of creating 3D objects beyond 3D printing.

Now, all MS Office products can bring in 3D objects of the correct format.

If we want full color, we can't directly go from MOI3D to Office.m But, by going through a relatively simple workflow through a virtually free product called MeshMolder ($6) and a final conversion in the free Meshlab to .PLY, we can get there.

Here is my first test. Click on the .gif to animate

So end final format for import inside MOffice is the PLY ?
There are no other formats possible ?

Simple format OBJ from Moi3D gives colors inside the free Microsoft 3D Builder

So here just one free gobetween! ;)

Thanks, Frenchy! I will check out 3D Builder.

I appreciate it.

Hi Frenchy,

It turn out that the .3MF file format is more reliable than the .PLY or the .OBJ.

I managed to figure out the workflow to go from MOI3D to MSOffice using Meshmolder, Meshlab and 3D Builder.

I couldn't find a way to import the color .OBJ I had imported to from MOI3D because there is no material file. I needed to unwrap the UV in meshmolder and save the ,png, which I cleaned up in an image editor. Then I imported that mesh and png into Meshlab and exported to create an .OBJ having a material definition file.

The Meshlab export .OBJ, .MTL and ,PNG where brought into 3D Builder and it was used to export the final .3MF file.

I am not sure how many people are crazy enough to take that many steps besides myself; but, here is a video that demonstrates the process from start to finish.

NOTE - UPDATE: Thanks to Frenchy and Michael the link below is obsolete! I created a new video that is much shorter showing a more direct route.

Hi Tom, MoI will write a .MTL material definition file when you generate an .obj file, unless it has been disabled under Options > Import/Export > OBJ options > "Write .mtl file".

No problem Tom!

The materials will come from the style list in MoI.

It works like a charm!

I had tried it after Frenchy indicated it should work and I could not bring in the colors for whatever reason. So, I went searching for the long route.

I tried again after you answered and made sure the .MTL file was being created. It was. But, I THINK I thought 3D Builder was asking for the .PNG file when it was actually asking for the .MTL file. In any case, I now have the right workflow, thanks to you and Frenchy.

It's a LOT cleaner, too. With no image editing required!

I love hanging around with people smarter than me!

I have to admit that color 3D is a complete mystery to me beyond the simplest of levels. It's just plain voodoo! LOL!

Thanks, Frenchy and Michael.

I am working on a new audio track for the video. (The current track was a bit stream-of-consciousness and hesitant.)

But, when that is finished, I would love to have a link published.

I will let you know when the video is completely finished.
