Feature Request - Webcam as Texture for live tracing + Lock image to rectangle geometry

I have two related requests.

1.) Would it be possible to allow a webcam stream to be used as a live texture inside MoI?

2.) Would it be possible to add a feature where an image automatically scales to fit a selected rectangle in the editor? This would speed up alignment when using an image for measurements.

Thanks!

Hi FDP,

Sorry no that doesn't seem likely.

Could you show an example? It should be possible to fit an image to a rectangle currently
using object snaps.

Perhaps I am unfamiliar with an existing feature. When I import an image it is easy to snap it to an existing rectangle - if the picture and rectangle have the same aspect ratio. Otherwise I have to guestimate the alignment using the image align functionality. It would be great if there was a checkmark during the "pick corner point" operation that offered something along the lines of "scale image aspect ratio to fit corner".

Thanks,
FDP

Hi FDP, what is the desired result that you are looking for with that image?

Do you mean you want the image's aspect ratio to be ignored so that it would be squished vertically to fill the box?

Or do you mean you want the image to maintain it's aspect ratio but fill the rectangle vertically instead of horizontally?

I would prefer to be able to force the image aspect ratio to be ignored. It's not much work to do this in an outside program, but it would be nice to be able to stay within MoI and preserve the original image so I don't have to produce a copy of it. This is particularly useful for images that don't have square pixels.

Hi FDP, I'm sorry but the image function is designed to maintain the original aspect ratio both when placing the image and also when sizing it by the edit frame.

If you know the specific width and height that you want, it is possible to set those in the image properties and you can uncheck "Maintain proportions" in the image properties dialog to allow that numeric size edit to ignore the aspect ratio.

But I'll see if I can cook up a script to help.

Hi FDP, here is a script that will create an image to match a selected rectangle, select the rectangle before running it.

The image will be stretched to match the width and height of the rectangle without keeping the original image's aspect ratio.

There are instructions for how to install a plug-in script here.

Hope that helps!

Thank You Michael!

This will definitely help streamline my workflow to remove image editing software from the mix.

If you are interested in my application/use, I sometimes use MoI for making optical measurements with a telecentric imaging setup. The less I process the images before bringing them into MoI the better.

It's very ad-hoc and I change the image sensor pretty frequently, but I get a lot of value and efficiency out of the pairing of MoI and the telecentric rig and I am yet to find a CAD software with a better sketch interface than MoI.
