Orientation of subd nurbs import

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to moi3d and I'm currently testing out some ways to take mesh files into CAD. I use a few different ways of doing this, but I like to bring them together to compare. If I load in a stp file, it comes in a specific place in 3d space. If I then take the obj and import that using the subd from file option it gets flipped. It's like the y/z up thing is back to front. I can't seem to get it to work right.

Any help would be great. Is there something I need to edit somewhere? I've tried the y/z up in the options but this doesn't change it

Cheers

Hi Chris, where does the .obj file you are importing originate from?

For the next v5 beta there will be some new options for rotating the SubD import from Y-Up to Z-Up which may help:

In the meantime the easiest way to re-orient the object inside MoI is to use the Transform > Orient > View to View command:
https://moi3d.com/4.0/docs/moi_command_reference8.htm#orientviewtoview

To do that, after you have done the import the imported objects should be selected. Run Transform > Orient > View/View, and at the first prompt where it says "Click in source view" in the prompt in the upper right corner of the window, click in the Front view. At the next prompt where it says "Click in target view", click in the Top view. That should reorient your objects.

Hi,
It's from Rocket 3f, or topogun. Just a retopo surface I'm bringing in to get a CAD surface from it. I'll check out the command thanks

Hi Chris,

re:

Do either of these have any options for the exporter for what orientation to use for generating the .obj file?

Previously you wrote:

Were you referring here to the option in MoI under Options > OBJ options ? Those options apply only to OBJ exporting out from MoI. They don't affect SubD import conversion.

But you might be able to find similar options in Rocket3f or topogun, look for import/export options in those apps.

But it's pretty straightforward to fix it using Transform > Orient > View/view , you just click once in the front viewport and once in the top viewport and it will remap the selected objects.
