How do I shell an open box?

This would be easy enough in Blender, but I am not sure how to tackle it in Moi. The faces are self intersecting and I would like to avoid that.

The other option, is on real boxes, the lids have gaps cut at the width of the material.

You can see it on unfolded boxes.

So all the flaps need to be trimmed off by the shell width (half for each side), if you want to shell it inwards on itself..

The lower box part has the trimming handled by shell because they are joined edges...

Hi MRAKGR, shell in MoI works best either on a solid or for thickening an open surface it's best if it's a smooth surface.

You could try something like Edit > Separate to break it into separate surfaces and then use Shell to thicken all of those but like Burr writes above on a real box there is a little bit of empty space between flaps which might help if you had that here as well.

Hi Markog, in the attached version I've opened up that little bit of space in between the flaps by copying edge lines and using Edit > Trim and also cutting out the margin in the corners as well.

With this setup you should now be able to shell the whole thing ok, set Shell thickness = 0.05 and set Direction: Flip.

The spacing helps to keep the flaps from running in to each other.

Thank you , this is a good solution.

The way I've did it is by drawing a rectangle and sliding it along the corners to make a cut using bool diff. I am not sure I understand why you would copy edges and trim them. Wouldn't that be a more complicated way of doing it? Did you create a rectangle from the copied edges or something else?

Hi Markog,

re:

I copied edges and then used the copied edge to trim the surface. So like this shown with an exaggerated distance:

> Did you create a rectangle from the copied edges or something else?

I didn't create a new rectangle, I used the ones that you had in place already and trimmed them with the copied edge.

That was a simple way because I didn't have to draw anything new, and I didn't need to know the size of the planes, I typed in the distance I wanted to cut off the ends when copying the edge to turn on distance constraint to copy it at a specific distance.

There are a lot of different ways you could do it though.
