Hi Michael,
Here is a simple pdf save from an application (Scapple).

There are text bubbles that dont come through on a MoI import. I can open the doc in adobe reader and print it with a "Microsoft pdf printer", then the text imports to MoI...

Can you help me understand. Either MoI is missing something or scapple is not writing something correctly and I can approach them. I just dont know enough about pdf to figure it out myself.

Thanks.

Hi Burr, it's a limitation in MoI's PDF importer.

MoI's PDF importer will read the vector graphics paths out of the PDF file.

In your 123.pdf example file, the text is stored as text entities and not as vector paths. MoI does not try to read those in as of yet, it can be a fairly tricky area with having to deal with embedded fonts.

When you convert it with the PDF printer, it's generating vector paths for the text content instead of text entities, that's why MoI can read that version in. In Adobe Illustrator there's a command like "Text to path" that will convert it also.

can add to what Michael said,
as far as I know, almost every vector graphics
program has that "Text to Path" option.

It is also interesting that the "microsoft pdf printer" exploded the text into geometry.

That is a little nugget to know. I think that's what threw off my thought process.

But i also was unaware of the text block limitation for MoI's import. So a plethora of little tidbits here.

Johnny: "That is weird stuff!"

So: Text in an SVG or PDF file does not open to MoI 5beta. The geometry does open in MoI.

Some experiments:

Rhino 8 has a Text checkbox, and does open and show PDF text (annotation text?).
Rhino 8 also opens and shows SVG Text. (At first it seemed like it did not, but it actually does.)

Rhino8 can save the SVG or PDF as Version 5 3dm file.
Rhino8 also has a checkbox to not save "Texture" to the 3dm file.
MoI opens said (version 5) 3dm and then does show the "Text". Must now be geometric "text"?

Affinity designer2 opens the SVG and PDF's with Text.

Hi Brian, yes currently text entities can be read in from .3dm or .dxf file formats.

SVG and PDF imports do not currently process text objects. If you do get text from either SVG or PDF imports the text has probably been converted into general curves and not as text entities.

Thanks,
- Michael
