Kubotek Kosmos framework inside MoI3d

Is there any plans with implementing Kubotek framework/kernel inside MoI3d?

I`m asking because I`ve read it about here (on this forum) some while ago.

Is that idea still active?

Cheers!!!

Hi mdesign,

re:

Currently not really. They just haven't shown any signs that they're going to dedicate the large amount of man-years needed to make robust fillet and shelling operations.

If they can get to the point where CADKey is using it and doesn't need ACIS anymore then that would be where it needs to be. That was their original goal but I don't think they are working towards that anymore. I haven't communicated with them in quite a while now, maybe I should since C3D is looking like it won't be feasible.

I've tried with parasolid already, it's very expensive and it's quite finicky in what type of geometry can be translated into it.

So I've ruled it out once already. Maybe I should try it again at some point here if there isn't any other way.

Not that I know of.

ACIS before parasolids. I think the challenge with acis would be more dev time on robust error handling. Its so much more open it leads to an appearance of "buggy" if error conditions aren't handled professionally...

Thanks a lot for your reply. Do you know any more affordable kernels which could be worth to look?

What do you think about Open Cascade kernel (FreeCAD)? Could it bring a bit better fillets/ offsets/ shelling or it`s not worth to check?

I mean as addition to existing one. Something like that: https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/scripting-freecad-from-rhino-filletedge-case/135784

If it is worth to do it inside Rhino maybe it`s worth to have it inside MoI3d.

I`m only thinking loudly and I don`t want to start any software war.

Cheers!!!

Hi mdesign,

re:

The only one I know of is C3D but since that is from a Russian company it's probably not going to be feasible to use it for the time being at least. I was just about ready to spend some time doing a thorough investigation of it when the war started.

> What do you think about Open Cascade kernel (FreeCAD)?

I've looked at it a few times, it's generally not at the same level as the commercial kernels.

> Could it bring a bit better fillets/ offsets/ shelling or it`s not worth to check?

Maybe in some cases. There will be a large amount of work involved in incorporating an additional kernel though.

I think that's about a n-sided patch surface filling mechanism which is a newer thing that's been developed in Open Cascade. So it could very well be in better shape than other things.
