Hi,
I need a "hand" to be attached on a ring segment. And I tried it with the flow tool.
It is not bad, but not perfect. Perfect would be if the hand attached would not come in at the near of the ring. Like on the plane is the goal after flow on the ring.
I tried it with many dimensions of the plane. Or where to click-place on the plane and the ring. But I never come nearer than the status now.
(sorry for my surely complete brutal english)

Mala

Hi Mala, re:

I'm sorry I'm not understanding this part. Is it that you want it positioned more towards one side of the ring surface?

One thing that could be good to try is calculate the length of this curve here:

You can do that by selecting it, then push "Details..." :

And on the detailed object properties push the "Calc" button to calculate the length. You can then click on the length label to copy it to the clipboard:

Use that distance for the height of your plane to get a closer proportional match between the plane and the bent surface.

When doing the flow click on these spots to control the matching between them. Notice it's not right on the corner, it's a little distance away from the corner along one edge:

Or also spots like this would work too, again the key thing is not exactly on the corner, it's a little distance away from the corner along one edge. Not exactly in the corner and not exactly halfway between 2 corners.

To place the hand is not really the problem.
It is that the shape is "hanging over". So I got problems with the CNC-work and deform the object out of the tool.

Hi Mala,

re:

That's sort of the basic nature of this kind of tranformation, the shape will expand like this, and the further away from the base level the wider the expansion:

Hi Mala, I'm not sure if this is what you need but it is possible to use Construct > Curve > Silhouette to make a mold "parting line". You can remove an area of undercut with it.

Construct > Curve > Silhouette can generate these using "Top" as the projection view will generate these curves:

Trim the surface with the silhouette curves:

Project the silhouettes and extrude the projections:

Trim extrusions:

That will cause the shape to drop straight downwards with no area "in shadow" :

Hi Michael,
i guess it is a smart idea. Thank you!
I cannot reconstruct the workflow. Do you initiate it at the already attached tow-finger part?"
And do you do it in the top view with the top option choosen?

Maybe you could share the 3d file?

Hi Mala, it starts with the file you posted above, "hand Moi Forum Shown.3dm".

Open that file and select this surface:

Then run Construct > Curve > Silhouette:

In the command options choose "View: Top" and then push "Done" :

That will generate these curves:

Just these 2 are used, you can delete the others:

Then it's Trim the surface by those silhouettes, Construct > Curve > Project to project the silhouette to the construction plane, then you can either loft between the silhouette and projection or extrude the projection and trim it. Let me know if you need more step-by-step for these parts.

3dm file attached.

Hello Michael,
fine, this workflow. I was able to do it. I wasn´t fully happy. Because this is a Logo of a product and it needs to be as near as possible on the original shape.
My workaround seemed to work also. Must wait was the milling company says - but I hope it will go on with my version. I didn´t bend/flow/attached the hand not anymore on a half circle segment. I made a quater segment. And now I got a much better result - not fully perfect...I will see...

Here a first prototype of a former try...
Thanks and best regards...
