Hi Phiro,

I tried to replicate your sock piece!
However, I'd be happy to know how you made it's ring.

merry Xmass

Hello Michael,

Seems of the front part of the sock are visible how can I have it invisible.

I want the red surface to be attached to the rest of the sock smoothly. How can I do it? (I used sweep to make that)

Hi,

My process has been :
- a simple curve of the form
image host

- I trim it with a line to have 2 curves which could become 2 rails for an sweep of an elipse

- I sweep with the 2 rails

- I use a blendCap for the round end

- I do an offset shell to have a thickness

- The bead is done with a cutted version of the inner part and a offset shell with more thickness

- Ended with some filleting.

The bail is one of my standard obj library part I've done years ago (I don't remember how I made it... Sorry with years my memory fails

Hi Psygorn,

re:

It's often good to try and make pieces that should be smooth to each other to be constructed out of just one larger surface instead of patching in several pieces.

So for your case here I'd probably try having the sweep rails longer like in the attached version.

Another possibility could be to trim away some empty space between the surfaces and use Construct > Blend to put in a smooth blend surface between them. But it's usually better to make things that are supposed to look like one smooth piece to be made out of just one larger surface. Sometimes it can be tricky at "pole" pinch-point areas though.

Also sub-d modeling is good at making blobby shapes that are smoothed all over.

Hi Michael,

and how could this barreling effect be avoided?

Hi Psygorn, yes that is the down side of having sweep rails that come together to a single end point. You can't use "Maintain height" anymore because it would form a collapsed vertical line at the end instead of it going down into a point. Hmm I wonder if I can tune this up so that it only ignores it for the area past the last profile when there are multiple profiles instead of it being turned off for the entire sweep.

A different method that can be good for blobby smooth capped ends is Construct > Loft using Loft type = "Loose" with a closing point as in the attached version.
