Automatic installation of Moi3D on Linux

Hi everyone I wanted to report the availability of a script for Linux users who have difficulty installing Moi3D in Linux operating systems, The script was released today on GitHub with MIT License.

It does nothing but automate for beginners all the operations necessary to use Moi3D with WineHQ in Linux.

For now it already supports several distributions including Raspberry ARM, and the most used distros such as: Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora, Arch etc.

It could be inserted among the resources in the Moi3D links in order to be accessible from the site's homepage.

Hi pafurijaz, I thought it should only be necessary to use your system's package manager to install Wine. Once Wine is installed you should then be able to run the MoI Windows version .exe installer directly.

Then whether it's going to work well or not depends on the quality of your video driver.

Are there some distros where it is difficult to install Wine?

This script looks like it installs some things which shouldn't be needed for running MoI like winetricks, mono, and gecko. Just a plain regular Wine install should be all that you need.

Hi Micheal yes this is an automatic installation is for beginners in Linux but still they need to know how to use the script, Mono and gecko are needed to have Moi3D fully functional, the wine tricks are useful for Winehq to have some Windows features, but not strictly necessary for Moi3D but useful. Personally I've done all necessary steps, by my self.

Hi pafurijaz, what do you need Mono and gecko for? MoI v4 does not use the .NET runtime which is what Mono emulates nor does it need a Windows web browser like gecko emulates. Neither should be needed for MoI and I have not needed them with my own prior testing.

All that is needed is just plain default Wine.

What are the Windows features coming from winetricks that would impact MoI?

I don't know why it needs these two software, but I'm sure that for moi3d I had to install Gecko and as it says here it needs IE7, for Winetricks it can be useful to install and manage the versions of Windows, in my case the interface of the windows changes and I don't know what it is now but with a Windows version I can better explore the operating system directories, and you can install recent versions of DirectX and OpenGL and various dlls

For the rest I try to investigate better but every time I update WineHQ and open Moi3D I have to wait for the installation of the two components otherwise it won't start.

Hi pafurijaz,

re:

The thing that says that is from 2007, that's 14 years ago and is no longer correct. That was for MoI version 1 and version 2. Starting with version 3 MoI does not require IE7 anymore.

That's something built in to the standard Wine version, I think since those pieces are large it will prompt you if you want to install them or not. You don't need to install those for MoI to run, it does not use anything from Mono or gecko.

All you need to run MoI is to install standard Wine, no optional components, no gecko, no Mono, no winetricks are required nor are used by MoI.

The other piece that you need though is a good video driver that isn't full of bugs.
