Rotating in the Perspective viewport

Hi Michael et al,

I'm wondering: is there an easy way, or is it possible at all, to rotate an object in screen space the Perspective viewport?

I've tried switching the Perspective view to orthographic mode, but no rotate / scale gizmos appear, and the Rotate command seems a bit cumbersome to use in the perspective viewport if you have snapping turned off, but maybe I'm using it incorrectly.

It would be very convenient and powerful if this would be possible, preferably with the addition of a 'trackball' rotation mode, rotating the object across multiple axes at once by moving the pointer around.

Thanks!

Click one time the "Reset" Button
Mouse Wheel for have the size wanted
Mouse Wheel Click pressed + Move the mouse for pan anywhere you want
(better if it's in the middle :)
*** now you can use the "Rotate" icon *** ;)

Merci Pilou!

I meant rotating an object in the Perspective view though, not rotating the view itself. :)

Metin -

Yes you can rotate an object in the 3D Viewport.

The trick is you first have to select the curved rotate handle on the Edit Frame while in one of the other views, then switch to 3D view. You'll then have dashed lines surrounding the object that allow rotation in 3 axis.

Ah yes for the object itself... :)

But in this case you can also use the Normal Rotation tool by Axis! :)
maybe less polyvalent in one move but more precise and snaping possible on something! ;)

Hi Metin, if you set the construction plane to the view direction then the rotate command would rotate in screen space. There's a script here:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=2599.8

or this variant:

This style usually isn't done in a CAD program because it is imprecise to just map some arbitrary amount of pixel distance to an angle.

Many thanks for your very useful answers, Ed, Pilou and Michael!

I've mapped the CPlane to 3D view script to my V key, the variation (CPlane to only the 3D view) to Shift + V, and script: /* Reset Workplane */ moi.view.resetCPlane(); to Alt + V, it works perfectly!

I love the MoI community!
