Moi v4 freezing/crash.

I am getting consistent freezes of the application forcing me to exit the application through the task manager.
I am able to win+tab out of the software and save the file via hotkey (UI crashes).

It happens every few minutes, even with simple scenes. I didnt have any such issues with v3 and HUGE data sets.

Can anyone provide any solutions?

Hi 2byts, sorry MoI v4 is not working well on your system. It's most likely some problem with the video driver so it would be a good idea to update to the latest driver to start with.

There are a couple of settings in moi.ini you can try adjusting to see if it makes any difference -

DisplayThreadLimit=1

and

StaticBufferMaxVRAMToUseMB=0

also you can test setting

GraphicsAPI=OpenGL

Another thing is when you go to close it with Task Manager, right click on it and choose "Create dump file" to see if you can get a crash dump file created and then send that to me at moi@moi3d.com , that might help me to get some information on what is happening.

Hi 2byts, so the crash dump seems to be waiting in a normal event loop.

One odd thing is it appears that the display driver (nvwgf2umx.dll) has created 100 threads in the MoI process which is kind of a lot.

There are also threads created by DiscordHook64.dll and Wacom_Tablet.dll . I'm a little suspicious about the DiscordHook64.dll piece, I see a mention here where it was causing a problem:
https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/heroes/t/game-crashed-on-startup-after-46-0-patch/21920

Does it help if you disable that Discord overlay widget that is injecting itself into the MoI process?
https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/217659737-Games-Overlay-101

Are there any other game overlay or hooking type apps that you might have active?

Thanks,
- Michael

Interesting....I use discord for a lot of streaming, and communications to clients, and it is "always on" for this sake....I will test with turning off the overlay mode.

I am also using Slack, Whatsapp, and Signal. Home office requires online communications unfortunately. I still have v3 installed....which is stable.

Hi 2byts, did turning off the overlay mode have any result?

It did not, I turned off all applications during the modeling process and its still crashing. v3 does not crash.

I noiticed it is likely to happen during viewport changes.

GTX 3090 "PLUS" Titan X????

Maybe go into the driver settings and on program tab, add MoI as a program and set the master GPU as the one to use...

Hi 2byts, that's a bummer I thought that was going to be the culprit.

Are you running any other software that might hook itself into running programs at a low level like anti-virus/anti-malware type stuff?

Did you check if there was a newer video driver available?

About the last thing I can think to try is if you send me an e-mail (moi@moi3d.com), I can send you a version that has a Direct3D9 renderer enabled. One of the differences between MoI v3 and v4 is that MoI v3 used Direct3D9 while MoI v4 uses Direct3D11. I have a version of v4 that I can send to you that can use Direct3D9 instead if the drivers for that are more stable on your system for some reason.

Thanx Burrman, I will give that a go, and may even just remove the Titan to see if it helps.

Michael, I am not sure what would classify as a "hook" these days. Win10 is a minefield of system notifications and popups. I tried to quit any background applications while modelling, and that was the Crash Dump i sent you in the previous reply.

The only anti-virus/malware apps running are the vanilla Win 10 apps, and cloud services like Dropbox, GoogleSync, OneDrive. Its a new system, built from scratch just a few months ago.

The crashes can take up to 20 min before they occur, which is why I am having a hard time pinning what triggers it.

I am using one of the dark skin themes , would that make it unstable?

Hi 2byts,

re:

Yes it doesn't have DiscordHook64.dll loaded anymore in that crash dump so that should rule that out.

Unlikely.

What are your system thermals like, do they keep climbing over the 20 minutes of activity?

You can keep track with HWMonitor from CPUID.

I am watching the temps as use Moi3d.

Right now I am doing stress test, with rendering a heavy scene in Redshift using the 3090, while modeling in Moi3d using the TitanX in open gl. I just discovered I can right mouse on an application and choose the which GPU to use in Open GL.

CPU temps running a flat 60 Celsius with a 30C ambient temp, and fans running on MAX.

Still freezing up, I might get a few degrees spike ....but nothing suspicious.

I have Moi installed on the network, in a dropbox folder. Would this interfere?

Hi 2byts, well it sounds like thermals are not the issue that was worth a check.

re:

Probably not.

Can you please generate a crash dump from v3 so I can see if it has the same huge amount of threads created in it by the video driver as is happening to v4?

Hi 2byts, I was looking over the crash dump info a little more and I noticed another possible hooking thing: NahimicOSD.dll .

It seems to be part of your audio driver which has several DLLs loaded but the "OSD" part of that one probably means on-screen display so it's another possible source of interference and has also caused crashes in other apps previously too:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/office-applications-crash-due-to-nahimic-audio-driver-1a7cdd29-5c89-4579-9043-faa97120ff92
https://github.com/visualboyadvance-m/visualboyadvance-m/issues/623

If you can figure out a way to turn off that piece as well that might be worth a try.

It's a little strange that the audio driver has something that hooks into the video driver display code but that is what it appears to do.

It looks like you might be able to find a Nahimic service running which you could disable in Win+R services.msc .

Kind of sounds pretty close to what you are describing:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-other_settings/nahimic-audio-issues/7c10e6ec-01bb-49ea-ba21-a93e037dca81

quote:

I had the same ploblem with sound , but I got other problems with 3D apps that are not games. Unable to open stl or ply files, refreshing of windows piling on the top of each other, a nightmare before finding the problem. So I just stopped/deactivate NahimicService, and the result is instant. You restart your programs and all goes well. Win10 2004, last version of Nahimic on 2020-04-26

So definitely worth a try disabling that.
