Is mesh importing on the cards for a future version of Moi i.e converting .stl/.obj to stp?

Hi Sebastian,

Sorry no that's not likely to be a target area for MoI. STL files contain just a big heap of triangles, it would require a pretty specialized reverse engineering type toolset to get that into CAD surfaces and solids.

Importing just the vertices should be straightforward and would help enormously to reconstruct imported objects by snapping new geometry to the imported vertices, so I'm still hoping Michael changes his mind at some point. :)

Hi Andre, there is a converter app here which will open an .obj file and convert it the polygon edges into line segments in a 3DM file which you can then load into MoI:

Whoa, that was here all along? At least for me that actually solves most of my STL import needs.

Hi Andre,

re:

Pretty close, it's been there on https://moi3d.com/resources for 9 years now.

You have also _ImportObj by Max Smirnov for OBJ format...

http://moi.maxsm.net/files/scripts/ImportObj.v.1.5.2015.09.10.zip
Better if your obj is "Ngons" (quadrangles is the best)
150 000 polys is reasonnable

Press Tab and write _importObj
When you have import it : Select by Browser's button "Edges" copy move them ... you have segments as support new drawing...

You can of course Sudvide after it if necessary...
The complete thread ;) http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=6674.1
http://moi.maxsm.net/files/scripts/Subdiv_beta9.zip
Press Tab and write Subdiv_beta9 (or make a ShortCut)

You have an other native method of subdivision : SubD / Create from file (OBJ format)
