Antialiased and sharp viewport - tutorial

Hello
let me show you how to enable anti-aliasing and texture filtering in the viewport.
Tutorial is meant for Nvidia graphics card users, but similar options exist in AMD cards too.

This is how vanilla Moi 3D viewport looks like (left), with jagged edges of the geometry (not curves), and blurred textures at an angle.

And this is how it looks with special options (right), that can be enabled in your graphics card control panel.

Open Moi, then navigate to your Nvidia Control Panel by right-clicking on your desktop.
Open the 3D Settings > Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings, then
Add new program, select Moi from the list and
enable these options:
  • Anisotropic filtering 16x
  • Antialiasing FXAA - On
  • Antialiasing Gamma correction - On
  • Image Sharpening - On
    • Sharpen = 0.01
    • Ignore Film Grain = 0.0
  • Multi-frame Sampled AA (MFAA) - On
  • Vertical sync - FastSync
Click Apply and viola!

Hi Fubax, one thing to watch out for is if selection starts to misbehave after modifying those driver settings.

MoI generates some images internally for selection and when the color values there are mutated by anti-aliasing it will get messed up. That would manifest by the wrong objects being highlighted when you move your mouse around.

Hi Michael, ok I will look after selection misbehave, and update the post if I notice something.
For now everything seems to work fine. :)

To speed my workflow, I often just use the Windows "PrintScreen" key and Microsoft "Paint" (simple and quick for cropping an image) to take a detail or overall snapshot of a design.

Firstly a simple question: If I applied the suggested settings, I assume "PrintScreen" would grab the improved image, as processed by the graphics card?

Second question: Could I install two instances of MoI3D on my PC, one without the tweaks associated with it to ensure accuracy, and a second with the tweaks for those times when I want to do a number of snapshots?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Yes, the print screen should capture the image as it is displayed on screen.

Another method you can use is to set up a script on a shortcut key that will make MoI generate an image that can be higher resolution than the screen.

You can do that with a keyboard shortcut as described here:

I believe you can't to run these "two" different installs of Moi for run them on the same time!

But you can run 2 sessions or more of the "same install" in the same time...

Maybe, it depends on how the video driver is set up. If it sets things up based off only the .exe name then it would end up applying the same settings to each install.

@Pilou,

re:

You can do that, but if the video driver controls its settings by the .exe name that will be the same between both installs.

Thanks for your replies. I will try the script out. I've seen it metioned in the forum before but never remembered to set it up as I rarely use any scripts!

When I'm on the PC I'll experiment with the graphics card settings and two installs.

On my laptop, I've now got two instances running. One is from the original MoI.exe in the MoI 4.0 folder, and one from a clone called MoIC.exe running from a duplicated folder called MoI 4.0C. I even changed the shortcut icon to launch the clone to the old Windows Fax Service icon, as after all that made clones of documents! It may be enough to fool the Nvidia settings.

Thanks

Andrew
