Hi,

I just started trying to figure out v4. I have some basic problems. When I'm zoomed in and try to rotate the model flies off screen. I tried messing with the button sensitivity options, but that doesn't seem to be it. I'm wondering if there is a way to pick your rotation point. I didn't see any button or default shortcut for it. I know in Rhino v5 there was a button I added to pick the rotation and camera angle to solve this type of issue.

I'm having a bunch of other problems, trying to move from Rhino v5 to Moi v4. However, I don't want to list them all in one thread. Perhaps I will email Michael with them. But this view problem, seems like there must be a trick to it.

Thanks,

Anthony

Select the object you wish to be at center of rotation.

On the right pane menu section, Click the "View" tab. Next, click the "Reset all" button.

You can also go into your "Options" > "Shortcut Keys" and assign a short cut key to the script: script:moi.view.resetAll();

Hi Anthony,

That "problem" seems very familiar, ~3 months ago.

Try Options> View> Rotate/Pan/Zoom options> Rotation style> Free rotation

thanks guys. it looks like the reset all option did it. i never would have thought that's what that did. i appreciate it. the free rotation didn't seem to work on this particular issue. i'll look at assigning a hot key. so far i got the xyz points import working and the custom lighting. the custom lighting is really awesome. the oil slick option looks really good with my type of models. i still have a long way to go with figuring out moi, but so far i'm impressed. it seems to do a lot of things way better than i'm used to.

There is a button in each viewport. The reset all does all at once. The one in each viewport can be used for quick, individual focus setting...

Hi Anthony so yes the issue is you need to get the rotation pivot point set to a good location.

Using "Reset" on a view will set the rotation pivot point to the center of the selected objects (or to everything regardless of selection if you repeat it a second time).

Another way you can do it is with the Zoom area button on the toolbar at the bottom of a viewport. That will let you pick a point for the center of the zoom window and the point you pick there will become the rotation pivot point so you will rotate around that point.

thanks guys. i have a lot to learn. sometimes i get confused because i go to do something i've done in rhino v5 a thousand times and don't see an equivalent.

one thing i'm noticing that is different is i used to use wireframe view all the time. so i would switch between shaded (like what moi has) and then wireframe (which i can't seem to find in moi).

i was having problems with hiding and showing lines, but i figured it out. moi is quite a bit different than rhino v5. so i probably will have a lot of dumb questions. i did download the pdf help file. so i try to reference that.

""""""so i would switch between shaded (like what moi has) and then wireframe (which i can't seem to find in moi)."""""""""""""

That can be done in MoI's scene browser under types. Use the eye to hide "Faces"... (I think there's a script already written for a shortcut)

But really, that's an old artifact of Rhino's display system not being up to the task on heavier models, so they even made it default to that.

I guess at some point it becomes a "Feature" for some users, expecting it...

MoI can handle those situations "Better" (Opinion).... Best served to look\research, ask about those, than cling to old way...
(Obviously take that with a grain of salt and work how you like. Not a dig on how anybody works it).....

So just having "Show Hidden Lines" turned on in the options-view tab, gets you the same results, without the "Wireframe" view....

yeah. i need to see through the solid better than the hidden line is doing. some surface colors and lighting make it really hard to see through. maybe the scene browser option you mentioned could work. i'll check it out. thanks

thanks burrman. turning off faces did what i needed

Hi Anthony, re: wireframe - that's primarily the default view in Rhino be cause Rhino was originally designed to run on a Pentium 90 and it just wasn't possible to work in shaded view all the time.

MoI doesn't really have a wireframe view like that, but you can see wires by turning on hidden line display and also you can hide faces as well.

Just in general MoI is not really designed as a "drop in" replacement for Rhino, it is focused on different things than Rhino.
