UV mapping

Hi guys I'm trying to understand UV mapping in a render ... my question is how can I unwrap an object and then create a texture to apply on it?

I don't know if the technique is right or if there is a dedicated technique

Hi Tony, which rendering program are you using?

Hi Michael I use Artlantis studio

In particular I made a tire ..... in that case do I need to blow up the tire on a plane?

Hi Tony, well you don't do the UV mapping in MoI, you need to use a UV mapping tool either one built in to a rendering program or also there are standalone ones like:

UVMapper: http://www.uvmapper.com/
Unwrap3D: http://www.unwrap3d.com/u3d/index.aspx
Unfold3D: http://www.polygonal-design.fr/

Are you sure you need to use UV mapping for the effect you're trying to make in the renderer? There are probably some types of shaders in Artlantis studio that don't need UV mapping.

Hi micheal

I wanted to recreate effects like these:

https://cassagi.com/project/jeep-willys/

In Artlantis I honestly don't know if they can be done .... that's why I was wondering how it could be done maybe someone has already done it :)

Hi Tony, I'm not familiar with Artlantis myself so I'm not really sure what your best route would be for that.

But I'm kind of under the impression that Artlantis is focused on doing architectural type renderings which seems pretty different from what you want to do with it.

3D Coat or ZBrush might be good tools for painting on that kind of dirt.

Of the 3 programs you attached me I was seeing Unwarp 3D but I can't understand how it works.

In practice, as I understand, you have to insert a geometry drawn in MOI and exported to Obj for example and he creates a flat square image where you then create the texture with a photo editing program? .... or does it work differently?

Yes, Artlantis Studio is a program that they use a lot in architectural rendering but I'm trying to make it work even for not too complex objects.

Yes that's basically it - the UV mapping generates a 2d coordinate value for every polygon vertex to control how a 2D texture image will be applied onto the polygons.

The tricky part is avoiding the image getting stretched out or compressed in different areas.

For chunks of dirt like you want it may be better to sculpt those in using 3D Coat or ZBrush though.

Thanks Michael,

the thing that is not clear to me is, for example in the case of 3D coat, it is applied on the rendering or it is a separate thing .... in the sense the 3d must be done directly in 3d coat or it can be done in moi, rendered in artlantis and finished in 3D coat? .... this is not clear to me.

Hi Tony,

In 3D coat, you will paint over the UV map, this map can then be exported with your 3D model, and rendered in any 3D renderer.
If you want to paint, one of the best tool for this is Substance Painter : https://www.substance3d.com/products/substance-painter/

You need 1st to generate your UV map, in a 3D software, then you export this map to Substance painter with your 3D model, and do your paint there.

Hi Pilou,

yes I only know that it doesn't integrate with my render engine ... I think

Hello Virtual_Francky

I think I understand but my rendering program does not generate UV maps and I need a program that generates UV maps, Michael has listed some programs that can generate them but the demos do not allow the export of the map (you cannot save) so I couldn't test the program and the resulting map .... so I couldn't create anything.

Now I simply used a dirt map to simulate the dirty bodywork but it is not the same as a 3d painter in my opinion .... the effect is much more unreal than a dedicated map

No problem :)

about easy easy Paint or texture on 3D volumes take a look to the Paint 3D given (so free) by Windows (if you have this OS)
Not headaches and not long learning curves! :)
You can insert any volumes made by Moi ;) OBJ, STL, FBX...
