Hello everybody, here I share a little project that involved Moi3d for the modelling part, at first I was not sure if it was a good idea to model in Moi for a 3d printing project but it end up that is a pretty good choice :)

Looks great Frank. I've used MoI to make many electronic and electro-mechanical projects for my 3D printer - Does a great job.

I like to use brass heat-set threaded inserts to assemble parts. Give them a try if you haven't already.

Thanks Ed. I just received the 3d printer few weeks ago and this is my first project where I model myself the parts and then I assemble them ( for the first tests and try I just downloaded STL from the net). You just opened me a new door :) I will give them a try for sure!!
If I can ask in your opinion PLA is fine for those kind of projects where there are involved PCB and circuits ?
Cheers

Frank -

I use PLA 90% of the time. It does absorb water, so use it for indoor projects only. No issues with electronics indoors. After trying several brands, I settled on www.proto-pasta.com

For outdoor projects, use PETG filament. PETG is used to make water bottles.

I purchase my brass heat-set threaded inserts online from https://www.mcmaster.com/heat-set-inserts

Here's one of my projects designed in MoI and printed with PLA filament. http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=8944.1

I had some issues with the corners of the lid warping during the print. I now model a 4 layer high, 2" diameter disk at each corner to help hold the object to the bed. Makes the model look like it has Mickey Mouse ears. The ears get cut off after the print is finished and cooled down.

Looking forward to see what else you end up making.

WOOW Ed, it looks fantastic, pretty advanced project. Really like it, for the moment I stick around raspberry pi and similar devices, I wish one day I will be able to go more wild an play with serious circuits like you do!
