This is a timely subject for me because I've been experimenting making cloth in MoI as a foundation to place my rings on for rendering. Keyshot has a new procedural material called Real Cloth that I'm experimenting with.

I completely forgot about this script and have been using the HeightMap script (also by Max) to generate the cloth from a 16 x 16 pixel gray scale image I "paint" in Affinity Photo. I like the Cloth script better :)

I'll post some images when I get back to that project. Currently I'm wrapping up a MoI 1950's Custom Pickup Truck tutorial.

Thank you for the suggestions, everyone! I'll experiment with lofts, maybe I'll make something palatable, especially since I'm dealing with pretty small and simple objects. Sculpting what I need would probably be easier for someone who's good at it, but well, that wet paper bag thing wasn't an exaggeration.

There is also CLOTH and SCULPT CLOTH in Blender 2.8.3.

I think Michael's suggestion works great, and allows maximum artistic control. A bunch of free-form sketch lines, Loft, and then 'show points', and then you have an interactive view of the cloth and you can 'art direct' while moving the points around.
