Love the beta. MOI3D & 3DCoat are great combo. And fantastic bargains when compared to the competition. Michael Gibson rocks!

I installed the beta on my I7-4700 and I got these icons on the bottom of the screen. I recently built a newer Ryzen 7 3700 and decided to try the beta on my new computer.
However on the AMD Ryzen 7 I do not have these icons. How do I enable them?

Thanks Micheal for creating such an awesome piece of software.

Cheers

Ken

I believe that all these icones are from Max Smirnov Custom UI...

Not so evident to install ;)

These tools do not display on my install of MOI3D ver 3 or of the earlier versions of beta 4 on my I7-4700K. They appeared only in the Jan 22-2020 beta 4 on my I7-4700K.

Hi Ken,

re:

That's normal, those icons are not part of the default MoI install, they are part of a customized UI plugin written by Max Smirnov like Pilou writes above.

> How do I enable them?

You would need to install the CustomUI modification on the above link.

I would recommend holding off on that for a while until you get accustomed to using the normal MoI installation first.

Most of those icons you show there can already be found on the side pane - "Sel all", "Desel all", and "Invert" can be found on the side pane under the Select tab. "Image", "Cplane", and "Reset all" can be found on the side pane under the View tab, "Hide" and "Lock" can be found under the Edit tab, and "Horiz center", "Top", "Bottom", "Vert center", "Left" and "Right' are inside the Transform > Align command.

They are not part of the default install, I would guess that you must have installed the CustomUI plugin at some point?

Do you have any files inside your %AppData%\Moi\startup directory? By default that directory is empty, if it has the CustomUI files in there it would be because you installed it there and that is what makes those icons show up.

Hi Ken,

re:

Ok - so with a default MoI install that folder is empty. So with those files in place there it means at some point in the past you copied those files into there which is how the CustomUI extension is installed.

That is what is making those additional buttons show up on that machine.

If you have another MoI install on a different machine that you want to behave the same, you will need to do the same installation on that machine as well. That means copy those files over to the same spot on your other machine and also check if there is anything under %AppData%\Moi\customui or %AppData%\Moi\commands as well. If there is then copy those over too.

Once you have installed the same customized stuff onto your other machine as you have previously done on this one then it should behave the same.

Right now they are behaving differently because you have the CustomUI extension installed on one but not on the other.

Thanks Michael. I did as you suggested and copied over the startup folder to the new computer. It worked as you said. Many thanks.

Dear MoI3D community,

I recognized an issue with the size of a curve (Freeform & control points) in my actual MoI3D V4 22Jan installation.

In the parameter box of the object (here called "Curve100 x 5 mm) the size is shown with 0 x 100 x 4,6 mm. When editing the size by clicking on the size, the size of the curve is listed with 0x100x5mm (what it should be). So there is a mismatch in the size displayed to the real. The object itself has the size of 0x100x5mm. (pls. see attachments)

What did I do before? The initial object size was 0x100x4,6mm. Then I re-sizes it by clicking on the size and entering a new number 5mm instead of 4,6mm.

I also recognized that this behaviour appears in my examples only when the curve had more than 3 points (more than start, mid, end).

Maybe there is a setting to get the displayed size refreshed somewhere in the option menu that I simply did not found till now (I'm really a beginner in 3D design).

Thanks for help,

sunspeed

Hi sunspeed, the size shown on the top level of the properties panel is an estimated size done with a quicker calculation. For solids and surfaces it is the bounds of the display mesh and for a curve it will be the bounds of points sampled along the curve.

Because that piece of UI is updated on every selection action, it needs to be a quick calculation. Otherwise there could be a kind of laggy or hiccupy feel with more complex models where it would be doing a lot of work on every selection click.

To get a higher accuracy size you can click the size label and the "edit size" menu will pop up. The values on the edit size menu are done using the more complex full analytic calculations on the spline surfaces or curves.

Hi Michael,
thanks a lot for your explanation. The way MoI is doing the calcs sounds efficient. Was just not aware about this calculation process.

All the best,
sunspeed

Should there be an indicator, say ~, before the less accurate number? :-)
(asked partly in jest)

Hi,

Don't know if this question have been send before.
I like the possibility to import OBJ in V4beta.
But it's linked to a subd operation next.

Of course we can use a separate script to import OBJ,
but if we could avoid the subd operation in native V4, it would be cool.

Have a good 3D !

Hi Phiro, sorry no I'm not expecting to have that kind of non-sub-d .obj import. The problem is that NURBS solids are not intended to be made up of say a hundred thousand little tiny flat faces. There is some overhead in how NURBS surfaces represent faces with an "underlying surface" and then trim curves that mark areas of the surface as active or holes. So each surface in a NURBS solid is more complex (but can do more) than a polygon in a poly modeling program. A model with a hundred thousand little tiny flat surfaces is very heavy and unwieldy when represented as a NURBS object.

A NURBS model should have larger smooth surfaces in it, like a sphere for example should be just one exact sphere surface with a trimming boundary on it, not a whole lot of little flat facets.

If you have an .obj file that you want to edit as polygons, then MoI is just not the right tool to use for that job. It is not designed to work with that type of model structure. You should be using a polygon mesh modeling program to work on that kind of data, it will not work well with MoI.

Since sub-d smoothing generates larger smooth surfaces, it's the type of import that does fit ok.

Hi Michael,

Any idea when we will be able to see the new dimensions in PDFs? If I recall, you still have another beta release in mind, might this make it into that beta? If so and if soonish, I will prefer to use your new dimensions, but will otherwise use Max's Dimensions plugin as the PDF export looks better. I haven't been able to make the clipboard export look as nice as the PDF export (mainly resolution). Many thanks for all the effort you've put into MoI!!

Hi Larry, soon I hope. That is one of the last remaining areas left to do though. I've just about got my board cleared of bug fixes and should be able to focus on finishing up dims.

It's definitely a target for this next (and last?) v4 beta.

Hi Michael, is there a difference in installing CustomUI in v3 and v4? I know this is most probably error in my side but I can't seem to get CustomUI working correctly in v4 January Beta but it works great in v3. Also I'm using the dark gray theme with the custom ui bar.

Edit: sorry just additional info to clarify: The CustomUI shows fine on the v4 interface, but Obj Library and Scripts does not list anything. Scripts and Object library shows up fine in v3

For my Windows 10 setup, AppData/roaming folder has a copy of the Objects folder, for MoI4beta, and also has a Commands folder with "non-standard extra scripts", mostly with a _ prefix. (_ prefix is not needed.)
The "standard" regular MoI4beta commands are in the C:\Program Files \MoI4beta... directory.

MoI3 files are under Program Files (x86), with their own copy of Objects folder and All commands.
