hi michael,
i haven't used just a 2d cad package since the 90s. but as far as low cost 3d cad, there isn't much out there that is any good imo. MoI is surely the best. I know you have recommended ViaCad a lot. To me, that interface is awful. I have tried Turbocad a long time ago. I used to have Alibre, from way back in the day. I guess Alibre is back as an independent company again. I would say for low cost cad probably Alibre is the only thing I would personally try again. However, with you adding dimensions to MoI that won't be necessary. So I'm grateful for that. The only reason I would get Alibre is if I needed parametric CAD. But being retired, I don't need that. For others, the combination of the two (MoI and Alibre) could be useful though.
Since all the CAD and CAE consolidation, it's a dismal time for engineering software. I wish people would stop giving in and leasing software. The fact that people go for it, just makes the companies keep doing it. Seems like in the future you will have to lease software. Also can't stand cloud stuff. But people seem to go for it. I like owning software and running it locally. Why you would spend tons of time creating stuff and not being able to access it unless you keep paying the company is beyond me. Also trusting that your ip is safe on the cloud is crazy. Customers are making terrible choices that only embolden the companies. Pretty soon people will start leasing virtual turds that they can watch flush on cloud toilets for $1000 a month.
ok, old man rant over. back to your important things to do.
