I had to get some Blueprints ready, ASAP - and Moi3D was soo much faster to work with compared to AutoCAD.

Just gave the beta a spin on my Linux workstation and it works like a charm so far (fingers crossed). I am super impressed by the subd to nurbs option. Fast and results are really good.
On a linux side of things I've accidentally forgot to disable dxvk in the wine prefix... and to my surprise it didn't cause any issues so far. Will check out the built in hud to check whether dxvk is being used.

So in the next couple of days I'll be setting keys / macros then will try opening some heavier files from Rhino. If all goes well I'll finally have a proper nurbs sketching on my regular PC :) .

edit: one glitch I've found so far - sometimes when I hide browser tab MoI seem to be stuck with the selection on one of the objects in the scene, on the active layer. Thus I can't select / move etc other objects. When I open browser tab I can select etc again. Hide browser - can't.

This seems to have something to do with OpenGL on Linux getting confused in some way when the viewport windows get resized. I haven't been able to figure out why it's sensitive to that yet.

ok, hope this one gets a workaround. I'm able to reproduce it a bit too easily - so will definitely have an impact on overall workflow.

Which API does MoI v4 use - OpenGL, DX ? And are there some config options to force a specific API? I'd like to tinker a bit as hopefully this one might have a workaround (like Nvidia triple buffering redraw bug).

Hi Przemas, the Windows version of MoI will use Direct3D11 by default on Windows and OpenGL by default when running on Wine.

There is a setting in moi.ini you can modify to use a specific API:

GraphicsAPI=Direct3D11
or
GraphicsAPI=OpenGL

yup, confirmed - happens with OpenGL renderer. Does not happen with DX11.
With forced DX11 I noticed that MoI starts correctly with DXVK. Sadly when you start adding / extruding geo visual glitches happen. Thus had to disable DXVK.
Still have hopes for that option as most of the times if I get the app working with DXVK I get the best performance and stability (Vulkan is awesome from end user point of view - but I totally get it how much more work it requires from dev side, one of the reasons I have my hopes in translation layers like dxvk).

edit: and with api set to DX11 the __GL_MaxFramesAllowed = 1 setting is not needed

edit2: another small thing I've found - in V4 selecting sub patches is trickier than in V3. For example on a cylinder to select a "cap" in V4 I need to really play with camera view position till it allows me to pick the cap. In V3 it works like a charm.

Hi Konni, yes the Jan-22 beta does not expire until Sept 12, so you should download the Jan-22 to keep v4 running right now.

Your shortcuts and settings are stored in the moi.ini file in the appdata folder. The new beta will use the same moi.ini file and so those settings will automatically come over.

For scripts that you have added, it depends on how you added it. If you put them in the appdata commands folder then the new beta will find those there as well and you won't need to do anything more.

If you copied the scripts into the install commands folder, then you will need to copy those over so the new beta can find them. MoI will look for plug-in commands inside both the install's commands folder and also the appdata commands folder. I would recommend putting them in the appdata commands folder so new versions will find them there automatically.

On Windows you can find the MoI appdata commands folder by using Win+R to bring up the "Run" dialog and then put in %AppData%\moi\commands.

Thank you very much for such informative and clear answer.

I just wanted to say, as a MoI user for some years, thank you. I have *only* ever used it to convert CAD files to LightWave objects - that was the main reason buying it, and it has done a great job. The beta v4 has been a great asset for larger file conversion.

But this is not why I'm saying thank you. I'm saying thank you because I have recently used it to help me with our industrial design projects. We're a small 3D design house, starting as 3D visualisers, but two of the main guys, myself included, are industrial designers by trade. We use Inventor for our CAD work, but I don't use it, having moved into 3D visualisation way back after uni. When it came to the concept design of a new organic product, my usual modelling tool, LightWave, was limiting what I could do. I downloaded Rhino, and the interface put me off immediately. I needed something that *looked* simple, all the tools were visible that I needed - no clutter to befuddle the newbie.

So I looked again at the MoI I had installed and, after a day or two, I managed to pull off the concept process with me feeling as though I had controlled the design rather than the software controlling it. Having the bug I am now carrying out some in-house projects with it - and I love using it! Snappy and responsive, and pretty intuituive.

So, thank you. When v4 comes out I'll definitely be getting it!

We all are waiting for V4. I hope, it will come in the next time.
