Well, i have to options. I can put the (.3dm) file into the browsers window or use the client in terminal.

The process to time stamp a file is very very fast. The calculation is done by the servers and the client
receives the data (.ots file).

Yes. :-) but is it more a a protected proof of my files than a classical
file protection scheme.

Cool Pilou! :-)

About protection i must add also one very important thing, which i forgot to mention.

With Open Source security software such a signature acts as guarantee that when one
person verifies a signature it tells him/her that no one tampered the security software
from the original author. GnuPG software and others are using this protection scheme. :-)

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Just stumbled over your tips regarding time-stamping, very interesting !

An important and equally complicated topic.

There are different ways to protect intellectual property, like patenting or
registered / unregistered community design. Patenting takes lots of
time and money. "Community Design" (Gebrauchsmusterschutz in german)
is quicker and cheaper, but if you apply in the EU, I guess, it could get
hacked everywhere else in the world.

https://euipo.europa.eu/ohimportal/en/unregistered-community-design

According to the link above, you must have publically disclosed your design
to legally claim your rights.

Have you done research how much protection a time stamp will give you in real
life, say, you discovered someone is selling products using your design. ?

A friend of mine, although being consulted by a highly qualified laywer went into
bankrupcty after his designs where stolen by very prestigious big companies.

So its not really easy to protect your artwork. You may invest thousands in protection,
then it turns out you cant market it. You dont waste a thought in protection, and
others may make a fortune out of it ...

I would appreciate people with experience in this topic joining a discussion.

TOM

It may make sense to transfer this topic to another thread like "Copyright protection"
Just a thought - up to you.

Hi Tom,

> Have you done research how much protection a time stamp will give you in real
> life, say, you discovered someone is selling products using your design. ?

Very good question! I believe that a time stamp when using in combination
with digital signatures* can show third parties that you or someone else
has done a (published) work at that time. Should it come to court etc.
you have a non-fakeable proof that you did that design at that time.

We in Europe have the eIDAS regulation for digital signatures, which
allows people to sign digitally documents where the signatures are
equal like real handmade signatures.

People worldwide can then verify those qualified digital signatures on
.pdf documents with either the free Adobe Reader DC or with a web
based European service.

Sure, the question remains if a court would trust a honest little
freelancer or a well know company, which also "invented" that
design at a claimed earlier date, which they probably can't proof,
like i could with my procedure.

Regards
Stefan

P.S If you like i can prepare a little .pdf with a qualified digital signature,
time stamped with an eIDAS conform time stamping service, so that
you can see how those documents look like and what result a verification
shows, when using the free Acrobat Reader DC or the web based service.

Here I prepared a little demo .pdf showing a design (which i created many moons ago,
so it serves only as an example for this document) and at the bottom left
my qualified digital signature. The document was also timestamped after
signing, with an EU Trustlist qualified timestamping service. Not sure what services
are available in the U.S. to do the same.

https://ufile.io/c9jrevsp

And additionally one can detach sign the model file with GnuPG and timestamp
it too via the blockchain i previously mentioned.

You can verify the .pdf with the free Adobe Reader DC or at this European
site:

And the good thing with those qualified and eIDAS conform signatures
on .pdf documents is that multiple parties can sign the same document,
like your lawyer, a notary, your family, friends or co-workers.

P.S. in case someone from the U.S. or Canada has verified my demo
.pdf with Adobe Reader DC I really would appreciate a screen shot
showing the English output when clicking the menus. Thanks.

Hi Stefan,

Thank you very much for your answer and the PDF-demo, I´ll have a look
at it now !

Just read the case of a designer who did not care about a sound protection
after some years, and companies started selling dozens of millions of it -
no chance of getting a penny.

But a stamped date may be of use to prove a company whom you offer
your design that you are the originator.

Had a look at the PDF and it works !

Is there a step by step instruction somwhere
how to crate such a signature as well as
how to do that blockchain stamp ?

Thanks TOM

Hi Tom,

well a timestamp only may be not enough, i would strongly
suggest at least to use the free GnuPG (in case you can't use
qualified signatures with .pdf's. to detach sign the the model
file(s) etc. with your secret key and then timestamp those
detached GnuPG signature files.

Stefan

Hi Tom,

the qualified digital signature and the qualified timestamp
is done by services in Germany, which users with a German
ID-Card can sign-up. Those qualified signatures cost a little
money, for each session, also the time stamping service i
use for the .pdf. cost a little money per each session.

In case you live in Europe you have to check out what
service in your country is available to create eIDAS
conform signatures. Google for the word eIDAS regulation.

In case you live in the U.S. look for similar services
which offer qualified digital signatures or use GnuPG
and opentimestamp.org.

If you need help with GnuPG google for tutorials on
how to create a key pair and how to detach sign
files or documents. Opentimestamp with the blockchain
solution is easy. Simply visit their site and drag and drop
a file and then download the timestamp (.ots file).

In case you get stuck with GnuPG i will help you.

Regards
Stefan

For MoI users who have a German-ID card and are interested in this
topic, I use these two services:

https://cloud.sign-me.de/signature/start
for the qualified digital signature

and
https://www.dgn.de/dgn-zeitstempeldienst/

for the timestamp.

The timestamp service can be set-up in Adobe
Reader DC, with your login-credentials, while
for the qualified digital signature you have to
upload your .pdf to sign-me.

Stefan
