I think Pilou has a good hint there, there is a hex dome here for example:

You can import data from a polygonal (obj.) file in moi with this utility:

There is a couple of sketchup->obj plugins available I think...

That is a mixture of 5 and 6 sided which is easy to construct. The OP wants all 6 sided, which cannot be constructed if the 6 sided need to maintain correct shape/ size.

That's probably not going to work since it looks like it creates polygon mesh objects in the 3DM file and not NURBS objects.

MoI only reads NURBS objects from 3DM files and skips over other kinds of object types like spotlights, dimensions, polygon meshes, etc....

Yes, Michael you are right,
it is known, Moi and polygon does not go.
But both tools bring lines from polygons (created in Wings3d) in to Moi.
Both tools offer a different alternative.
Obj23dmWireframe = separate line segments, filesize larger

Best alternative for geodome could be Grasshopper, in continuous honeycomb geometry.

It sounded like the main goal of that other converter was to make a mesh object in Rhino, but mesh objects in Rhino are limited to 3 or 4 sided polygons.

So it looks like when possible (< 5 sides) that program will convert to mesh objects in the 3DM file.

But that's interesting that it makes a closed polyline for each face that cannot be directly converted into a Rhino mesh object.

Trick in Wings3d,
select edges, use cut(RMB) through 2, export as obj, (colors not correct converted)
In Objto3dm activate under options "convert NURBS to polygons"
Import in moi as closed polylines.

hi jesus here is a way how to do it :





1 : create cylinder and sphere and bloon-union, trim with red line to make just half (surface sim should be where the red line is), shrink surface,
make blue lines where the end controlpoints is .
make green lines lenght =~= half Circumference off cylinder ( yelow curve )=( 3.14 x D) / 2



flaten the surfaces :
move end controllpoints off surfaces to end off green lines
trime with hexsagone pattern
move back the the end controllpoints and you should get good shape

Just draw the crosshatching lines and run "Network" on them.. The resulting surface will have the point structure of the hatch.

Hi Charles, there's also a "Set Path" option in Extrude that you can use to generate an initial surface with a particular control point count - the surface made with that option will have the same control point structure as the extrusion profile in one direction and the path's control points in the other direction.

In the future I do want to make the "Add pt" command be able to add points to surfaces as well but right now it that one only works on curves.
