I think the only thing that sticks out to me (no pun intended) and feels out of place is the curved tongue at the top - just doesn't chime with my impression of what a spaceship would have?

The question I would ask is what function does that serve?

Typically at the top of ships you'd see antenna arrays or radar domes - look at the Roger Young for example.

I saw your post asking newbie advice about rendering somewhere else. Judging by the quality of this model I say, why mess around. Just buy yourself a copy of Modo. You won't regret it. Welcome to the world of CG.

The curve on the top is the style of the ships of this particular race. It's actually a design for a range of starship miniatures called Cold Navy. I imagine the bridge to be up in that area, but again, I was replicating a certain feel/design of that particular race's ships.

Yeah, I would like to render this, hence my other thread on getting into rendering.

I got a demo version of Modo - holly hell is that a complex program! I feel it might take me decades to learn how to do anything? Looks powerful, but I can't make heads or tails of anything. A big part of it is probably my general unfamiliarity with painting/modeling/rendering in 3d?

Try the Sports Shoe tutorial from the Luxology website. It's a beginning to end project.

Hi Mad Hatter, that is a great looking result! I'm really glad that you were able to construct a nice model like this being completely new to 3D!

It would definitely be cool to have it 3D printed, but yeah often times the next step will be to do some renderings first to kind of get more of a feel for how it looks like with lights and shadows going on.

Also the 3D modeling stuff will get easier and quicker as you continue to do more with it.

I'd say you're definitely off to a great start!

Yes, Modo is complex but with time, and tutorial study you should be able to learn it.

I also recommend Carrara Pro - it's simple to grasp and you can do a good amount of stuff with it.

The fact it also lets you create environments similar to Vue is a positive as well.

Definitely look around for the free version - you can't go wrong having that installed on your computer.
