Hi Dave , yeah I believe that image was done just by hiding the faces and leaving only edges showing for the outer objects.
Like Burr mentions, in v2 it's easier to hide things using the new scene browser control, under the Types section there is an entry for "Faces" which you can use to show or hide all faces to get that kind of a thing quickly.
But in v1 you can do it too, by selecting all the faces (that's when you do the "drill down" to reach sub-objects by the second click on a solid to select either face or edge sub-objects) and using the regular Edit/Hide command.
