Deselect Problem

Sorry if I am duplicating earlier posts.

I find it very annoying trying to deselect when there is not free space in the working area.
Is there any way to deselect by clicking out on the sides of the UI? (See image)

PS I have been working on the Rhino boat tute of a few posts back--as an old keelboat owner, adding "artistic" modifications!
(Well why not!)

Hi Brian, your boat is looking great!

Like Pilou mentions, the Esc key can be used for deselecting.

Another option using the mouse is to push the "Desel all" button which is under the Select tab on the right-side pane.

Pilou.---I avoid using the keyboard as much as possible.(I have to pull it out, sometimes even put the desk lamp on!
(I like to keep to MoI "Pen" principles even with a mouse!---avoid arthritus!)

Michael.---Going to the deselect all is as much a trouble as moving your UI to find a place to click on I think?
(I wont use Lightwave for the very reason that it will ONLY it seems deselect in the area I suggest---IF you can find a square mm of area to click on!---AaaaaHhhhh!)

Working on that boat highlighted this problem to me---for interest?

Hi Brian, it definitely can be a problem. What you describe is an interesting idea, but at the same time I do kind of worry a bit about clearing the selection too easily, because accidentally losing a selection that you have carefully built up can then be a different kind of problem.

Sometimes when you run across this problem one other way to solve it is to hide some of the objects so that there isn't so much stuff on the screen all at once.

Hi Brian,

You could customize and add extra de-select buttons.

As example, in the lower area add a de-select all button, or a row of (as in simple example) red icons,

then when clicked will de-select all. You could also add the same on the right side.

The icons could be the same color as the background, so you could have them fully hidden.

Would that help?

Except for the "you could" start it sounds a good idea in the short term though if all the empty areas of the right hand and lower areas could be that in V2 would be good.

I was quite amazed at working on the boat at how often--every few minutes, that the problem came up. I would click ,incorrectly, on one of many shapes that were faintly visible. I guess I will have to force myself to have the keyboard up on the desk with my left hand hovering over it. I was surprised at how my work flow slowed down.

Hi Brian, Hi Steve, I should be able to cook up something for you that will do that, I mean will deselect if you click in an empty area of the UI. I'll see about that a while later on tonight.

Hi Brian, I think this should do it.

Take the attached SidePane_deselect.zip file and unzip it to get a new SidePane.htm, copy this over top of the old version in the \ui subfolder in MoI's main installation folder. You may want to make a backup copy of the old version so you can restore it in case something doesn't work right.

With this in place, then you should be able to click in an empty area of the side pane to deselect objects. Try the area above "Draw curve", or the area at the very bottom.
