Reverse Flow

...ok so not a great subject title but I don't know how else to describe this:

Does anyone know a script that can perform the opposite of a Flow function? That is, take a solid which is flowed over & around a compound curve or surface and flow it back to a 'flat' solid?

I have experimented with simply doing a Flow from a 3d reference back a 2d & that can work for some things, but there's generally some distortion or artifacting.

I guess what I'm saying is; can a 3d solid be unwrapped or projected back to its original simpler form? (assume that all the parent solids, curves & surfaces that generated it are lost!)

Do you have any example objects?
