Roger that - so I found that if a standard Surface is to be used as a base, it'll work the same as a Plane as long as I use Command>ShrinkTrimmedSrf first and adjust points accordingly
(obviously easier to use a Plane in the first place)
Those doggone points control everything ;)

Seeing this has solved my quandary on how to italicize my custom font in MoI. I use MoI to make vector images - unusual workflow, I know, but I find it very easy to make shapes with compared to the likes of Inkscape - and have been making my own custom typeface.
