CONVERT LINE TO DASH

Hello PAQUICINNO
I built the shape in RHINO SUBD but can be built in other poly programs (SUBD did a better job in controlling minimal faces and clean joins) - I then convert to NURBS and use the RHINO COMMAND UNROLL DEVELOPABLE SURFACE to flatten. Pretty easy work flow I then manually split to fit on a sheet I have cut one on a plotter to test all worked perfectly.

Michael - many thanks for the script I am working this up to cut one out in metal would it be possible to add width to the dash in the script as an extra input or leave blank for general use - the straight slot works for paper folding but in metal lets say the metal is 2mm thick to hand fold it would require a slot width of about 2.5 to allow for bending clearances this way this sort of shape can be hand bent in metal then the major joins welded together.

Hi Alex,

re:

Actually I had thought about putting that in, but it's kind of complicated for it to handle dashes that go around a sharp corner.

But you can easily add width like that by selecting the dashes and using Construct > Offset with "Both sides" and "Cap ends" enabled:

The best way I found to unfold some items that I make in metal or cardboard is a program called pepkura > https://tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura_designer/

You get all the fold lines, tabs to glue and even animation how to fold and unfold...well worth the money.

Why not select the 2 curves and run the script ?

French version! ;)

Yep keep it simple all the above suggestions work why mesh with something when it does what it says.
Keep in the MOI wavelength.
many thanks all
Alex.

Strangely the plugin works randomly, it is unstable. Sometimes the plugin works on one line then no longer works on another almost identical one.
On other tests, the line on which I want to apply it disappears, when I exit the function it reappears but not always.

Hi Zooen, can you please post the .3dm file with the curves that don't work?

Hi Alex,
Awesome stuff!

This is a resource Michael provided a few years back.

Your work reminded me of it. Its cool because it allows you to design “cut paths” for curved surfaces also. So little half moon slices to roll up a flat sheet into a curve.

Thought you would like to get a look if you hadn’t already heard or seen about it.

http://laminadesign.com/index.html

I have a license but we never got the machine that would facilitate cutting paths well…

Thanks Burrman - I had crossed past Lamina years ago but didnt really have the way to cut those shapes outside of laser - I have just setup a CNC Plasma really economical setup single phase and just with an air compressor the cut quality is amazing. Ill have a play with lamina I have some 1mm aluminium should be soft enough to get it to bend into non planar shapes.
Here is a trial shape in 3mm Mild Steel 20mm Slot 3mm Tabs just like bending cardboard. I model the shapes with unthickened surfaces and so far the material thickness has really not effected the shape coming together I guess that maybe a problem in higher gauge materials.

Wow! I really like this last one!!!

Definitely look back at lamina too. The process has a “material thickness calculation.

Anyway, don't be shy about posting your results. That last one is beautiful!
