Hi blackboard, it would be unusual for a MoI script to work like that, usually a script runs and does some stuff and then exits. So there isn't much of an infrastructure in place to make a script like you're describing that would function very differently than regular ones.
There is a command IncrementalSave that you can put on a shortcut key that will save with the current filename but with a bumped up version number attached to the end. You can set that on something like Alt+S and use it without worrying about overwriting the current file.
