Thank you, pilou, for the link.
As I stated above, I can NOT share this file.

Hi morph3us,

So that's a bug, it's not intended that it should work that way.

Unfortunately no, there isn't any log that would help me to figure it out, I really need to be able to test with the actual file to fix file import bugs.

For now for your particular situation you could fix it by selecting the object that has disjoint pieces in it, then use Edit > Separate followed by Edit > Join, that should end up separating the disjoint object out into individual objects.

If I was able to reproduce the problem over here with a test file then I would be able to fix it for v5.

Hey Michael,

I was able to reproduce the behaviour with a really simple self-made model, which I can obviously share with you:
https://mega.nz/file/Rlwk3YRS#CvjDmf1PGjySmlty61QD5qLHD7dXzG4gecF8rlpY7HY

I created two cubes in FreeCAD, which do not touch.
Afterwards I fusioned both of them and exported a STEP file.

Both cubes, although completely separated from another, are coming up as one object in MoI.

Nevertheless, I dont think there is great need to improve this, I can just select the sub-object and rename it - done.

P.S.:
This opens up a whole new topic and I am not sure if you even want to hear it, but I really do not trust your Separate / Join commands.
I import the step files into Cinema 4D after I am done in MoI and all objects I used these commands on have one or another problem.
These range from empty objects (there are no faces / edges in the objects, although their names appear in the object list in C4D),
to broken boolean operations, where all of a sudden I can see the original boolean objects and the booleans, which looked fine in MoI, are incomplete all of a sudden.
So I tend to avoid them until now.

Hi morph3us, thanks for the example file. That is working how it is supposed to though. You end up with 2 separate objects which both have the same name assigned to them.

When objects have the same name, MoI will show only one entry for them in the scene browser objects section so that you can target them as a type of group.

When you select both objects you should see that it's reported as 2 solids:

So you don't need to do any separate/join fixing step for this one, they are already separate objects they aren't one object with disconnected "islands". The objects just have the same name.

Ok, do you have any example files for these problems so I can try to repeat the problem over here? I can't really do much about these just by a kind of general description, I need to be able to reproduce the problem and be able to test different things to try and correct it.

- Michael

Oh, also you can control how objects with the same name are processed for mesh exports by the setting under Options > Import/Export > "Combine same named objects":

If that is on, then objects with the same name will be all generated into one single mesh object in the mesh file.

If that is off, then objects with the same name will become separate mesh objects in the mesh file.

So if you don't want them combined set "Combine same named objects" off.
