Hi Nick, you can set up different materials in MoI by assigning objects to different styles. Then when you export to .obj or .lwo formats the style assignments in MoI will become material assignments and the styles list will become a materials list. Then you should be able to edit the materials.

For Octane it would probably be best to export using .obj format and use the setting for "Create: Quads & Triangles" in the meshing options dialog box that will be shown during the mesh export.

Thank you Michael, helpful as always!

Hi Michael,

regarding export settings...

it could be find on Octane forum two different ways for exporting mesh from MoI. Here https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1135 (after downloading tutorial) it could be seen settings with "quads and triangles" with unchecked "weld vertices along edges" (dated Apr 2010), here https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=637 it can be find recommendation to use only triangles + unchecked "weld vertices along edges" (dated Mar 2010)

Both advice's are a bit "out of date" from early stage of Octane.

Do you think, that quad and triangles settings would be better choice?

Thanks.
Mik

Hi Mik, well the main thing that you would probably want to avoid is using Output: N-gons, because Octane might not like to handle polygons with a whole lot of points in them. So either "Quads & Triangles" or "Triangles only" would be fine, it will probably not make any difference between those except "Quads & Triangles" will make a slightly smaller file size.

Thank you, Michael.
I've tried both settings and I really didn't see any visible diference in render image.

... only small update

it is better to use for Octane render (ver. 4.04) mesh export "Quads & Triangles" with CHECKED "Weld vertices along edges" (MoI ver.3).

This configuration generate smaller file, as Michael mentioned, and "Weld vertices along edges" allows to use function Rounded edges in Octane:

... without checked "Weld vertices along edges" function rounded edges doesn't work correctly:

Function Rounded edges helps to render more realistic pictures without needs to edge filleting in CAD programs.

Ciao
Mik
