Full Version: Settings for OBJ export?

Hey guys!

Im trying to figure out what settings to use for exporting my models from Moi3d to the renderer (in this case C4D)

I've been getting some problems. Here are screenshots from imported obj in C4D.
I have tried both N-gons and triangles and alot different settings...

Would love to hear what kind of settings you guys use.
I've included the 3dm file as well.

Cheers
Nick

Hi Nick,

looks to me that you have an issue with the normals. I would check
your import settings, if there is an option shown for normals and then
uncheck this option, so that the original normals from MoI don't get
modified or discartet.

Here are the settings i used for your model and the model shows
in Thea no shading glitches.

Hope this helps!

Regards
Stefan

Hi Nick, yes like Stefan writes above it looks like you're not getting vertex normals coming through.

In C4D look under Edit > Preferences > Import/Export > "Wavefront Import" and make sure "Import Normals" is checked.

You want to make sure the object is shaded using the vertex normals that are stored in the .obj file, those normals come from the original NURBS surfaces and help make the rendered polygons have the same shading behavior as the original CAD model.

If the vertex normals are discarded and instead created by averaging polygon faces it usually results in the type of artifacts that you're showing there.
