Full Version: Import STEP fails/stops

I have a STEP file, about 450-500 MB in size. I downloaded MoI 3D v3 trial to see if I could open it, but I'm not having any success with it.

What happens:
- I open MoI, select Import and select the file
- MoI starts to load the file. I can see in Task Manager that the RAM use increases
- When it comes to a certain point (about 2 GB RAM used), it stops for a few minutes, and then the RAM use goes down to about 1.7-1.8GB, and then it stops counting down.

The first time I saw this I let it run for about 10 more minutes. Nothing changed. Then I let it run for an hour. Nothing.

What's up with that? Is MoI generally not good for such large files? Or should it be able to take this no problem?

Hi Ola, the current version of MoI is still a 32-bit program and so it's limited in the size of file that it can import. 500MB is pretty big and it looks like you're running out of 32-bit address space while loading it.

One thing you can try is to loosen the display mesh density, go to Options > View > "Meshing parameters" and set "Mesh angle" to a looser angle like 30 degrees and uncheck "Add detail to inflections". That will produce a rougher display mesh but will also consume less memory so it may be possible to load the file after that but with your large file here it may not be enough.

This will be solved in MoI v4 which will be 64-bit and will be able to use all your system RAM instead of only a limited amount. The first beta release of v4 is getting pretty close.

On that subject, will v4 beta be open to all customers? I am dealing with a lot of engineering exports from step, and regularly run into issues with RAM. The problem is MOI is just so useful as a stepping stone between NURBS and Polygon world, it has become indespensible. :)

Hi DrDardis, yes the v4 beta will be open to all v3 owners, you'll just put in your V3 license key to download it. You don't need to register or apply for it or anything else like that.
