I'm always looking for inspiration. I enjoyed watching this behind the scenes from
Star Wars IV and it gave me some ideas. Think of this in terms of using Moi.

The computer he his working with is a science fiction item in itfself!
I especially like all the giant wheels that controls all of the axes of the object and the view, that's quite awesome.

Thanks Frenchy!
Having mostly Analog and Astounding SciFi - I've NEVER before seen any of these covers!
I love so much the scifi books from back in the '50s & '60s the illustrations alone would have your imagination flying; the finned rockets, they usually had someone holding a great looking laser gun too!
The authors back then had so much hope for the '90s as far as space industry and travel - we missed their marks by lightyears unfortunately. :-(
I just find these covers to be such an excellent inspiration for space related scenes and models for practice!
Some day when I have the time I'd like to make a model of Robby the Robot.
Its hard to find detailed photos, especially the moving mechanical parts behind the clear head. But I believe there is a reproduction robot at the Science Fiction museum here in Seattle. I'll need to take some close up photos.
Robby the Robot has made more cameos in movies and TV than probably any real actor. In Star Wars The Phantom Menace he was sitting in Watto's junk yard. I'm sure anyone under 30 didn't even notice.
He's always been my favorite too.
Thanks for the cool links, I love this stuff too.
There are some good images of related stuff at Flickr. Try http://flickr.com/groups/retrorockets/
a guy callec BuildersStudio is doing some great stuff out of actual materials like wood.
and at http://flickr.com/groups/86667072@N00/ there are a few Spanish sci-fi mag covers.
Right now I am making a horse sculpture and throwing together some furniture during rest breaks from it.
My next after that is going to be something sci-fi, maybe a raygun.
I keep adding stuff, but I also wanted to share this. I thought about doing a space cargo ship and decided to get logical about how it would really need to be designed. I figured it would need something at the front to deflect debris, crew quarters at the center where it's safest, the engine at the rear. The cargo containers would probably be square for efficient storage and ideally accessable on 5 of the 6 sides. I thought you could probably fit three around the center and still have room to move between them.
I sketched it up and thought, "hey, that looks familiar" http://www.squaremodels.netfirms.com/cm.htm
