Full Version: General menu versus Dimensions menu

A note on Options menu, versus Dimensions menu, observed when drafting an old deck for refurbishment:

The Options > Dimensions > menu shows >Formatting: as a separate section, separated with top and bottom faint lines.
(Which looks very nice.)

The Options > General > Unit system:
> Distance display:
> Fractional display:
> Decimal display:

is not separated by the faint lines. Since the 4 settings are related, it might be nice to format them similarly to the Dimensions method???

It is nice to have the Dimensions formatting separate from the General settings, in case the user likes decimal vs Feet & Inches, for viewing dimensions, or the user can set both formats to be the same.

Previously placed dimensions do not change their display format, in the event the master formatting is changed, which is OK, IMHO. (AFAIK)

Here in the USA, carpenters nearly always use feet & inches & fractions of inches, instead of Metric. I finally found a (half) metric tape measure at the hardware store. :-)

Hi Brian,

Yes that seems like a good idea, it is nice to break apart related areas when possible.

If you want to see what it will look like you can update your v5 beta's GeneralOptions.htm file in the ui folder with the attached version.

Yes, that's how it is intended to work currently at least. The properties you set in Options > Dimensions are "Property presets", meaning they will be used as the initial properties assigned to a dimension when it is created. Once a dimension has been created it has its own property values which can be changed by selecting it and using the "Details..." object property dialog.

Once a dimension has been created there isn't any further connection between it and the preset.

Maybe in the future something could be added for that though, like maybe at least some method in Options > Dimensions to select dims that match that preset.

Thanks,
- Michael
