Here is a box I designed in MoI and printed in PLA in 2018. Scroll down to see the brass inserts.

They work great in PLA and are very strong once you have the hole size calibrated for your printer. I printed a test piece with holes in various sizes near the nominal size to try them out. They take 3 seconds to set using a pointed tip soldering iron. I don't notice any smell.
