Only for information - I've found out that right click on existing object name in Scene browser does the same operation as "Assign selection here" function.

Yup, and also Ctrl+click on the object name is a shortcut for Rename (renames this item do not need to set selection first)
and Shift+click on the object name is a shortcut for Move (into/out of groups).
