Full Version: Solid imports with errors

From: Bob (APTIVABOY)

Hello everyone,

I'm stumped trying to fix an import error. I've created this design in Alibre. Its a solid, or should be. However, when I import it into MOI (as a SAT or as an IGES, the result is the same) I get a lot of naked edges and it isn't a solid. As a result, I can't do Boolean operations on the part. To make matters worse, I'm unable to correct the naked edges. Nothing I do seems to correct the problems. Any ideas?

Thank you for any pointers. I love MOI, but the import thingie is something that seems to dog my designs.

PS. I keep trying to attach the file, but I get the following message:

500 - Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

Hi Bob, the "Internal server error" is probably from the file being too large.

Please try zipping the file, does uploading the compressed .zip work ok?

The other thing is if you have a lot of previous attachments you may be out of attachment space. Go to Options > Attachments and if you have some large ones those can be removed to free up space.

Thanks, but it doesn't seem to be working. There are no other attachments there under Options; I seem to recall deleting them some time ago. The file is 11400 KB, and I've tried breaking it into even smaller component parts and it just won't upload. Hopefully, this Zip will work.

Hi Bob, it looks like that has a .3dm file -can you please post the STEP file (zipped)?

Thanks, - Michael

Thank you for your help. Here's a STEP version.

Hi Bob, it seems like the STEP file is messed up somehow.

Here's what I get loading into SolidWorks eDrawings viewer:

Hi Bob,
Looks like getting your model out of Alibre is creating fairly bad geometry. Alot of little slivers and bad surfaces.

Here I cleaned a bunch of stuff to verify the model works, but due to my lack of patience to work on it for 3 or 4 hours to keep your original intent, I heavily altered a few areas to speed it up. (I deleted some internal surfaces that were Mangled and cut out entire sections to facilitate fixing 400 Naked edges, etc.) So here is your model which can now work as steps and sats, but it isnt your original intent.

If you had the patience, you can fix it up in MoI

But, since You believe you have a qualified solid in Alibe, maybe go over and ask those folks about your export issue. Maybe there is some type of tolerance setting that has it be "Light" in alibre, but doesnt allow the surface join to translate out. Or try separating everything in Alibre and exporting all separate surfaces and see if it can be joined into a solid outside..

Just spit balling. I don't have Alibre

Hi Bob, could you post an SAT out from Alibre? Maybe that will be a better way.

The step file is a mess in Rhino8 as well.

Here's a SAT zip. The Gods are against me, even the Zip files not wanting to convert properly!

Hi Bob, are there any options for Alibre's SAT export? If so can you show me the options dialog for it?

Is the piece with fins one solid in Alibre or a bunch of separate surfaces? It seems to be surfaces in the SAT file.

Is that SAT file from Alibre or MoI?

Its made with the harmony ware translator. I wasn't aware that Alibre used that library...

Since Alibre is Acis based, the best export out should be the SAT format, from Alibre.....

Hi Bob, here's a version with things tuned up to be solids:

https://moi3d.com/temp/Bob9595593/Nacelle%20For%20Testing2_3dm.zip

There were several areas that had some teeny tiny micro edges, those can get in the way of joining. So I needed to reconstruct some places around those.
