Hi Matadem,

re:
> What do you mean by export the level 0 base control?

The lowest density one before any subd smoothing has been applied.

The one that is called the "control cage" in this video:

Hi Pilou - what you show there are examples of what you want to avoid doing.

Like this result:

That comes from applying sub-d smoothing onto a control cage that has not been set up for subd modeling, it's just triangles.

The result will be extremely overly dense and will likely contain a lot of bumps and undulations in it.

It will be difficult to use something that messy to do further work on.

So I'd recommend not doing any of what you show there, sorry!

Yes it's for that i try to make only quads! :)
and maybe many more...and must also be repaired because there is something who is false...not a solid when Join or Union...
... but it was from only a photo!

Hi Pilou,

re:
> Yes it's for that i try to make only quads! :)

All quads is one of the things you need to make a good sub-d object but it isn't the only thing.

The quads you have generated there are too small, each little quad will have a very localized effect on the subdivided mesh so it will be easy for there to be ripples and bumps in the shape. With larger quads a larger amount of the model's shape is impacted by each quad and it becomes less likely to have little bumps in the shape.

When bumps are stretched out over a large space they become much less noticeable.

It's kind of like this, here's a curve with a lot of control points, and one with only a small amount:

If I move the points around by the same distances on each, the sparse one still retains a smooth looking shape while the dense one becomes much bumpier:

Basically there is much more opportunity for generating lumpy/bumpy shapes if you have a lot of control points.

So that's again an example of something to avoid doing.

re:
> but it was from only a photo!

Yes, that's kind of interesting that it comes from only a photo but the result is way too poor quality to actually be used.

Cool model. Reminds me of one of those 1970s-1980s Can-Am road racing cars.

In Blender you would export the model before you applied the Subdivision modifier.

Here is a car model I've been working on in Blender.

This is a screen capture of the car with out the SubD modifier turned on.

Another car I've been working on. Since I was born in the 1950s, a lot of my car models are influenced by cars of the 1950s and 1960s as well as American style hot rods based on 1930s cars with fendered running board and 1940s fat fendered cars.

Sorry but when I upload the image at Sub D level 3 I am getting the message out of space. Tried several times. Not sure what is the issue as I re-sized it and compressed the jpg and still no luck.

Hi Ken,

re:

There's a limit of 50MB per user for forum attachments so the web server doesn't get too overloaded.

If you run out of space you can go to Options (on the top bar in the forum) > Attachments and delete some of your previous attachments there, or you could use a file sharing service like Dropbox/We transfer/One drive where you upload your file there and can post a link to it in the forum here.

Thanks Michael. Appreciate the reply. Is the 50mb limit per day or the complete total since joining the forum?

Hi Ken, it's the complete total of all attachments that have been uploaded.

Good day.
What would be the difference if I import already subdivided? other than it takes longer to import?
I tried both methods imported from Blender.
import non subd then subD in Moi then Boolean or import already subd then Boolean.
Blender (Although very awesome) just feels like Alibre or Freecad when I can do it Moi in no time :/

Tnx!

For anyone who's had their eye on Groboto or Mesh Fusion from Modo because
of their Boolean functions and blending feature.

An SDF modeler like MagicaCSG can do more or less the same thing.

Substance 3D Modeler is also a good SDF modeler with a good feature set.
There's a Steam version without a subscription, (ca 150.- euro)
with this Version you can model like in a desktop app, but also with VR headset
in VR.

I recommend to take a look at Youtube, there are a few videos
about how to model in Substance Modeler and in MagicaCSG.

Hi Matadem,

re:

It would make much more complex surfaces which will be extremely heavy in control points.

Everything that you then try to do with the object will tend to be slower.

Thanks for the info on MagicCSG and Adobe Substance 3D.

MagicCSG looks like it's still not finished and I am uncertain of what the cost will be.

As far as Substance 3D, I already give them enough money for use of Photoshop and Lightroom.
And I do not own or wish to purchase a VR headset just to use this Substance 3D.

I wish someone would create a Mesh Fusion like addon for MOI3D, Blender or 3D Coat.

I did download Modo 17.1 since it was released for free with a 10 year license but I find it's UI very confusing. Even move confusing then Blender when i fist started out learning Blender.

MOI3D has the best UI of any 3D app I've ever used, including Plasticity. My only issue with MOI3D is the shortage of good and easy to follow tutorials which is not the case with Blender or 3DCoat.

Cheers

Thanks Michael, I guess I will not be uploading anymore images then. As I really hate to delete past images I've uploaded.

It kind of annoys me whenever I do a search for a topic or "how to" on any forum and I find a thread that was posted a few years ago and the reference images are no longer available despite the topic still being relevant.

This is the first time I have exceeded any limit of the many forums I post to, including photography, automotive, 3d modeling and 2d digital art.

Cheers
