Hi Pior, you're actually the first person who has asked to turn it off - all the other feedback that I've had on it is that it's helping people to do selection, especially when things start to get a little complex. The highlighting helps you to see what's going to happen before you click - knowing what's going to happen before you commit to it just fundamentally helps with control.
MoI does already do a proximity sense like you're describing, you don't have to be exactly on an object in order to select it. Currently the proximity is fixed at 12 pixels, maybe that needs adjusting if you have a particularly high resolution screen. Right now there's no way to adjust that either but it would also be something that I could expose in v4.
