Hi immortalx, sorry there isn't any other way to trigger construction lines other than the hold and drag method.

But you can use a trick that will probably help your distance entering - just type in your desired distance constraint before you trigger the construction line. The construction line then should pick up the distance constraint as long as you are still at the first input point of whatever command you are running. That should hopefully be a bit easier.
