Hi Jörg - when you use the "preserve units" option for PDF export, MoI will only do some minimal processing of the coordinates so the conversion process can be directly controlled by yourself. To use this mode you will need to place your objects in the appropriate positions so that when converted into the PDF coordinate system they will be visible on the printed page. You could do something like draw in a rectangle of your expected PDF page size in the MoI model so you could have a better idea of what area in MoI's space maps to the page.
But if all you want is to have output that fits onto the page, just use the "Fit to page" option, which automatically scales and positions the output so that it is visible within the output page. If you do not need to have more specific control over preserving physical sizes then just using "Fit to page" should do what you want.

Well if "fit to page" does what you need, the solution is to just use that option rather than "preserve units".
You only need to use "preserve units" if you are going to be doing some kind of special process on the PDF output, like cutting out a printed pattern and you need to specifically control the exact size of printed objects.
