There is a rebuild command which enables you to nominate the number of points to use to reshape a curve(usually to make it smoother).

To use it select the curve, hit the TAB key which moves the cursor to the numeric input box, type "rebuild" and press enter and a dialog will appear in the properties panel allowing you to specify the number of points to use to rebuild the curve.
