Hi Paul, SLDASM and SLDPRT are not very commonly supported formats outside of SolidWorks, so it's really best to ask the original sender to send some more common interchange format like STEP or IGES instead.

I'm not really aware of any good inexpensive solution for that. DataKit does have a translator here: http://www.datakit.com/en/cross_manager.php . They do not list a price for it so it may be expensive but you could ask them about it.
