One note that may help you with some point selection though - if you hold down both Ctrl + Shift, that will force window selection mode when you click and drag, meaning that you don't have to click in an empty area to start the window when both of those are down, things won't get selected by the starting click when you have those down it just goes straight into window selection mode.
