You can set a thread to be ignored by scrolling down to the bottom of the right-hand reading pane and clicking the "Edit thread options" link (or also a shortcut is to click on the left side of the thread title in the left-hand pane where the read/unread icon goes).

Click the "Ignore" option and then go to the bottom and push the "Save" button and then I think it should not show up in your default list.
